Dude I am serious here! I'm looking for a project car. I first saw the car on gas monkey garage, and I liked the way it looked. I want it to be under $3000, not including upgrades. This thing cost that much brand new. LOL. I'm sure parts could be easy to come upon, or made to work with a little ingenuity. Also they looks awesome IMHO. Sorta reminds me an e30 a bit, I like those retro looking cars. Someone please try to talk me out of this. Or give me an idea for a different project car that makes as much sense as this.

I went to cars.com and autotrader and there were exactly zero real ads for even one Yugo.

They are super hard to find. The few that remain running are usually outrageous. I remember seeing one for 8500 a year or so ago, I'm sure he didn't get that but how knows, they're aren't many left.

there's maybe 10 on all of craigslist.

top ones better because it doesn't have jersey people on it.

...I used to live in Belgrade, which is about 50 miles away from Kragujevac, the city where it was assembled. It's funny, in the US they're starting to get a following, but in Serbia they are seriously loved by some, and ridiculed by most.

There are plenty of jokes about yugos as well! here's one:
The lead engineer at BMW and the lead engineer from Zastava (company that makes the Yugo) came together and decided to compare how well sealed the cars are.
The BMW engineer says "we throw a live cat in to ze car, and leave it there overnicht. If ze cat is dead in ze morning, then ze car is sealed well. If ze cat Is alive, then ze auto needs fixing!"The Zastava engineer laughs and says "E Brate! We do same thing! Cat in car overnight! In the morning, if cat is outside of car, car is bad and needs fixing, if cat is in the car, dead or alive, car is good!

But yeah, Yugos are seriously dime a dozen cars in Serbia, literally!
for 1000euros, you could probably buy four or five well running examples!

My aunt had one that was for the Italian market back it the early 00's.
Red with crème interior. only had 55,000KM's put on it over 17 years! it was pristine! we wound up donating it to a poor family friend from a village near Belgrade in '08. As far as I know, it's still kicking out there!

Oh, I have some photos of a Yugo engine swap being performed, if you guys are interested?

Thats... I don't know... I would have to see the car. But I want a streetable car, so I would put in a new interior.

You'd be better off with That one in the jersey craigslist for 1500. the 5k one looks full race mode, which is no fun to drive on regular crappy roads.

True. Plus I want to learn more about working on cars myself, so who knows whats been done to the race mode one. Looks like he made it for rallying.

A great car to learn with is a Fox bodied Mustang, replacement parts and go fast parts are everywhere and cheap. 79 to 85 have Carburetors, 86 and up have Fuel injection. 87 was when they updated the front and rear fascias and went to the Much loved 5.0 HO engine.

remind you of this?

One was a sporty little luxury car, the other was one of the biggest automotive mistakes ever bestowed upon the world.

its hard to believe this car was built until 2008

It just does. look at the front hood line on the top. and the roof, and the rear pillar... DON'T JUDGE ME they both give me that nostalgia feeling because they both are so damn boxy and squared compared to todays cars.

I think "both are boxy" is where the line is drawn. I still see plenty of E30's on the roads today, I haven't seen a yugo once in my 22 years on this planet.

If you change your mind about the YUGO, I suggest a Starlet 40/60 Series, the Mango Corolla, Rx2-4, 1st-3rd gen Civic, or other boxier cars. :)

I like the older civics, I'll consider it. But honestly if I was to get one, I would probably get a 2000, or maybe a '99. The rest of the cars...naw. I actually have an 2014 accord; when I was at the dealership i saw a Dx I liked. Restored for like $17,000. Had low miles too. It was like the one below, was red and really clean.

Truth is, any Fiat 127 part will fit right in and you can do C20LET swaps on them. So you can indeed build a (dodgy) pseudo rally car for cheap.

Do it. They're about as complicated as a stone axe, so they're easy to work on (other than changing the water pump), lightweight and quite rev-happy. Open up the exhaust and they'll do 115 mph (but pretty squirrelly at that speed) and get 25 mpg doing it.

On the downside, the seats are crap, they're noisy, the door locks corrode, rust is a given, and the carb can be finicky. Aftermarket wheels are non-existent (4x98 pattern).

This is my experience from owning 25 of the wretched things, including a brand-new one. Don't be tempted by a Cabrio (if you find one, they only made 75 or so) as the cowl shake is truly alarming.

You'd be surprised. I got more "nice car!" comments driving this thing than I did in my Healey. And it even fooled a cop (not a particularly bright one) at a traffic stop.

You're talking about cowl shake just in the cabrio, right? cause that would be sketchy if it was in the normal yugo too. If it is, I guess I'll learn how to weld. Add some braces. Also, I hate a major it of the convertibles out there.

Just the Cabrio. The hatchbacks are actually built pretty well as far as the structure goes.

If you're worried about that, you don't really want a Yugo.

http://articles.chicagotribune.com/1986-03-13/bus…

I rolled one at an autocross and didn't die. But there are better choices if crashing into things is your top priority.

It really isn't. I was just wondering how bad a crash would be. I honestly probably wouldn't even take this out of the city. Reports of it flying off a bridge due to wind at 50 mph. Sorta like smart cars, but without those super strong safety cells.
